The Maracaturra coffee varietal is a fascinating natural hybrid that captures the imagination of both home baristas and specialty cafe owners. A cross between the oversized Maragogype (the “Elephant Bean”) and the compact, high-yielding Caturra, Maracaturra offers a unique “best of both worlds” experience. Visually striking due to its unusually large beans and foliage, it is most famously cultivated in the high-altitude regions of Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

For the home barista, Maracaturra is an exciting challenge. Due to the bean’s massive size, it requires careful attention during brewing to ensure even extraction. When dialed in, it rewards the palate with a complex profile of tropical fruit acidity, bright citrus, and a heavy, syrupy body. It often features nuanced notes of peach, nectarine, and even floral hints like jasmine, making it a standout choice for pour-over enthusiasts seeking a “big” flavor experience.

The coffee-growing history of Dipilto, Nueva Segovia, is a story of resilience, high-altitude terroir, and a relentless pursuit of specialty excellence. Located in the far north of Nicaragua, right along the border with Honduras, Dipilto is the “grand cru” of Nicaraguan coffee.

While coffee has been grown in Nueva Segovia since the late 19th century, Dipilto truly stepped into the global spotlight during the early 2000s. Unlike the larger, more commercial estates in Matagalpa or Jinotega, Dipilto is defined by its small-scale family farms (often referred to as fincas).

The region’s reputation was solidified by its consistent dominance in the Cup of Excellence (CoE) competitions. Year after year, farms from the Dipilto mountains—such as Finca Los Planes or La Bendición—secure top spots, often fetching record-breaking prices for their unique profiles.
